As part of their commitment to making municipal information more open, transparent and accessible, HRM has started a 12-month Open Data Pilot Project that includes a nice user friendly web site and lots of data for people to play with. HRM’s Open Data Catalogue is powered by The Socrata Open Data Platform, the most widely-adopted Open Data solution in government. they claim that "Whether you are a software developer or a non-technical user, the Open Data Catalogue has something for you. - Anyone can easily create a map based on geo data using either Google Maps, Bing Maps or ESRI"

As part of the project, HRM will host an open data application contest this summer to inspire the development of innovative, interesting and user-friendly applications using HRM data. The contest aims to reward developers who create useful, creative and effective citizen apps using any of the available HRM datasets. Have an idea for an app? Then get involved.

In February 2014, following the pilot project, a report to Regional Council will present a recommendation on whether to move forward with a permanent Open Data policy. Now because this is only temporary I encourage everyone to go to the HRM Open Data Catalogue and download data, create maps with HRM data and show your support for open data so we can encourage more places to provide data for Nova Scotioners.

Matt Murphy, crime analyst with the Halifax Regional Police was interviewed this morning on CBC's Information Morning. He provided an interesting introduction to how the police are using GIS to identify and appropriately patrol higher crime areas of the city. Nice follow up to Superintendent Bill Moore's presentation at Geomatics Atlantic 2012. Way to go GIS!

I remember my COGS days....Actually, I think those who did go to COGS can never forget....it's all good.  Then again, I don't think it really matters what school you attended to learn Geomatics.... it is scary, frustrating, challenging, difficult, fast paced, crazy, and so many other words....Life Changing, Rewarding, Fun, Team Building, Networking, Interesting, Thought Provoking.....I could go on, but I digress...

Well, COGS held their Awards Banquet earlier this month and we just received the link to the awards pictures.  GANS would like to send a special hello to these special award winners, Alex Peters, Alicia Daniel, Greg Hunt, and Dan Arsenault.  Well done!  We of course also  Congratulate all the award winners and graduates this year.  Good luck on your future careers  :)

No doubt in our minds, we'll be in touch I'm sure.

Also, Thank you Paul Illsley for the great photos.

    Cheers,
    Gerard eddy

It's so interesting to see the growth across HRM in the past 28 years.  What an interesting tool to observe development and coastal change around the planet.  Which area do you find the most striking and why?

Dartmouth, NS – An American expert in the field of coastal mapping will offer his findings on the destruction Hurricane Sandy had on coastal habitats along the Northeastern United States October 2012.

Dr. John Brock, staff scientist with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Coastal and Marine Geology Program at the National Centre in Virginia, will present on his work on U.S. coastal hazards and how to protect coastal habitats from super storms in the Presentation Theatre at NSCC's Waterfront Campus, Dartmouth on Tuesday, May 7 at 7 pm

    The discussion will offer:

    ·         A visual tour of “Superstorm Sandy’s” impacts on urban and natural areas along the New York and New Jersey shoreline

    ·         A demonstration of the role coastal elevation mapping through airborne laser imaging detection and ranging (lidar) equipment plays in preparing for and responding to the landfall of major hurricanes

    ·         A lidar mapping and USGS Experimental Advanced Airborne Research Lidar-B outline

    ·         Early results from USGS coastal airborne lidar response to the landfall of Hurricane Sandy on the US Northeast Coast

Dr. Brock’s research has included co-operative efforts between the USGS, NASA and the National Park Service to create new remote sensing-based capabilities for coastal studies and natural resources management and applications of that work on national seashores.  Dr. Brock is familiar with province having received his post-doctorate at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth.
